About Jamie Wheeler

I’m Jamie Wheeler—a writer, English professor, and the founder of Tell Me Again, based in Denton, Texas.

I’m interested in the stories people tell almost as an aside: the teacher whose house seemed impossibly grand, the first job that opened up a different world, the person in an old photograph whose expression reveals someone you never knew. Those details are often where a life becomes most vivid.

Writing has been part of my life since childhood. At Arts Magnet High School, I was named Playwright of the Year during my senior year. I later graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas at Dallas, earned an M.A. in Humanities—Studies in Literature—with distinction, and completed my doctoral coursework and comprehensive examinations. My dissertation research focused on misunderstood women in John Steinbeck’s fiction.

Teaching has taken me from college writing classrooms to SMU-in-Taos, where I taught a course exploring Georgia O’Keeffe and Native American folklore. Across those settings, I’ve helped people find what they want to say, recognize the details that matter, and shape their ideas into writing that reaches someone else.

Listening Beyond the Obvious

In 2017, I founded Austen’s Autistic Adventures, now Adventures for Autistic Adults (A3), a nonprofit serving autistic adults. My work as a mother, educator, and advocate has deepened my attention to different ways of communicating—and to how easily someone’s story can be overlooked when we expect everyone to tell it the same way.

On my Substack, Objects May Be Closer, I write personal essays about memory, family, identity, and the experiences that change our understanding of ourselves. My work also includes interviews and portraits of people in the community around me.

Tell Me Again brings these parts of my life together. I conduct the interviews and write each narrative personally, with attention to your voice, your boundaries, and the people you hope will read it.
